What Type of Marketer Are You?

I know deep down I’m a marketer. Before anyone or a company ever affirmed it, the things that I naturally gravitated towards, always screamed marketing! During my exploration of marketing, I’ve been in marketing tech, marketing operations, integrated marketing (more sales-focused), marketing strategy, brand marketing, content strategy, and content marketing. All are marketing, but some are more sales-centric than others, which made me realize that I was a more creative marketer than anything.

This rabbit hole of jobs and career discovery has for the most part been an isolated discovery. However, I realize that a lot of people get tripped up when it comes to deciding which type of marketing role they should pursue. So I decided to help by creating this quiz!

Quiz: What Type of Marketer Are You?

Knowing you want to work in marketing is just the first step. Take this quiz to learn what type of marketing jobs you'd thrive in!

Last Minute Tip: Marketers, Do Not Take a Sales Job!

Now that you know what type of marketer you are, I want you to read this note from Devonta V. White. It’s important to understand that sales-centric roles are NOT marketing jobs, and the goals of the two jobs are very different.

Remember: Next time you’re in an interview and the hiring manager says that the goals are to “drive sales” or something sales-related, and that’s not something you want to do as a marketer, please reconsider taking that job!

More Tips For Aspiring Marketers

In case you want to know what I think as a marketer who’s been doing this thing for a LONG time:

Marketing and Sales are NOT the same! (They are however complementary)

As a creative marketer, sales is a heck NO for me and will most likely be a NO for you too.

The goal of marketing is usually awareness so that consumers can eventually buy/engage with a product or service. But even then, marketing and sales are NOT the same.

Also, if you’re a 🎨 creative marketer, you might feel like you’re only using a very small percentage of your talents if you work in a sales-centered role.

Long story short, don’t take the sales job.

As Devonta said, people like to put you in boxes, and once they see a ton of sales roles on your resume, they might find it hard to picture you in a marketing role. (Unless of course, you finesse those jobs + titles. message me and I’ll teach you how.)

P.S. Also saying that you want to work in marketing is an extremely blanket statement. Figure out WHAT TYPE of marketing you want to explore, so you don’t find yourself taking a sales role that you thought was a marketing role. Don’t leave this page without taking the quiz above! It will help you get started/make sense of your marketing journey. 🙂
