My trip to Austin, Texas was definitely one for the books. There were an array of fun people, night walks, and LOTS of food.
While it was fun, we ran into a few hiccups along the way. Here’s what I wish I would’ve known before traveling to Austin, Texas.
Austin, Texas: Travel Tips
“Holla-loo-yuh!” A young British lad shouted these words as he passed my friend and me on one of the many Austin, Texas nature trails. He probably shouted it out of pure joy, because he’d reached the end of the trail.
I also echoed his sentiment. My friend and I had walked a good 30-ish minutes to get to a top tourist-rated park, and then another 15-20 minutes to get to the Pinterest-worthy view.
My friend and I learned this the hard way, but if you’re traveling to Austin, Texas:
- Bring your good walking shoes (or rent a car). The streets are long, and you have to drive to most of the “cool spots.”
- Pack for the weather. It gets HAWT but it can also be cold at night, depending on what time of year you go.
- Stay in Downtown ATX if you can! We stayed on the outskirts. It wasn’t too far, but we did have to Uber to the downtown area everyday.
- Plan out your days & desired tourist spots before you get to ATX, or at least have a loose plan. You’ll waste too much time trying to figure out what to do if you don’t.
- If you like a lively crowd, visit Austin when they have a big festival going on. Otherwise, the city will be pretty quiet and empty.
Austin, Texas: Historic South Congress Guided Walking Tour
While you’re in Austin, you definitely need to check out the historic South Congress Street. That’s where you’ll find all of the major tourist spots and Instagram-worthy photo ops. Here’s my official South Congress Walking Google Map! I included a few bonus spots as well.
Torchy’s Tacos
Without a doubt, if you ask an Austin native where the best tacos are, they’re going to point you to Torchy’s.
The South Congress location does not serve alcohol (the other one does), but you’ll get some pretty good tacos.

Allen’s Boots
You want to make a stop at Allen’s Boots, for the boots of course! Ask the associates to show you their most expensive boots, and you’re in for a treat.

Home Slice
Home Slice is one of the food stops that locals love. You gotta go! Seriously, this spot is SO famous that celebrities have been known to make stops here as well.
No lie. While I was eating my pizza slice, Tom Brady walked in. 👀 I’m not saying you’ll run into him during your visit, but uhhh it’s a possibility.

Jo’s Coffee
Jos’ Coffee is famous for it’s super cute mural, and the story behind the mural is even cuter!
I didn’t drink any coffee but when I visited Jo’s Coffee, but if you’re following my walking tour map, now would be a good time to get some fuel. This is going to be a long walk!

Austin Motel
I don’t know the full story about the Austin Motel, but I do know it’s one of the oldest in the city, with a super cool sign!

Ego Bar
Depending on the time of day, Ego Bar should be open and popping! If you don’t mind a bit of day drinking, try a drink.
The alcohol here is strong guys and gals, so be careful! If you go at night, definitely get a drink and do some karaoke!

Bennu Coffee
If you’re feet get tired, Bennu Coffee is a great place to chill and take a break!
Don’t be alarmed if you see a lot of students studying. After all, it is a 24-hour coffee lounge in a college town!

Voodoo Doughnut
If you’re willing to take a slight detour to 6th Street, then check out Voodoo Doughnut.
Don’t get too wild, just buy like two donuts and get back to the tour!

Texas Governor’s Mansion
[BONUS STOP] I didn’t get a chance to stop by the Texas Governor’s Mansion during my trip, but if you have time, go check it out!

The Texas State Capitol
If you’re feeling bold, take a street pic with the Texas State Capitol in the background. 🔥
If you have time, see if you can do a tour inside of the capitol as well.
