Are You Pretending to Be Someone Else? Here’s How to Stop

Have you ever felt stuck in your life or career…like you know what you want, but no matter what you try, you can’t seem to move forward? What about hopping from thing to thing, and never feeling truly like yourself?

Well, if you said yes to either of those, you’re not alone. That stuck feeling is often less about strategy and more about something deeper: a lack of self-awareness.

When we hear the word self-awareness, many of us think of mindfulness, emotional intelligence, or just “knowing yourself” in a general sense. But real self-awareness isn’t just about thinking, it’s about knowing how your inner world affects the way you engage with the outer world.

Self-awareness is knowing your values and limits, your environment, your energy, recognizing your tendencies (both your patterns and your blind spots), and having the clarity to see how your behavior affects others, your progress, and your overall path.

The Two Sides of Self-Awareness

I called out a couple of aspects of self awareness above, but let’s break it down even further.

There are two layers to being truly self-aware:

  1. Knowing how you show up in the world – How you speak, how you listen, how you handle discomfort, and how you read a room.
  2. Knowing what’s really going on inside you – Your desires, fears, default patterns, and whether your actions are aligned with your values.

Most people struggle with one or both. And that’s okay, it’s not a flaw, it’s all data!

Dive Deeper: Are You Actually Showing Up for Yourself?

To help you gauge where you are, here’s a quick (but powerful) 5-point self-awareness test. As you reflect, give yourself one point for each statement that feels fully true in your life right now:

  1. You understand your strengths and limitations, and you actively avoid roles or situations that drain your energy or pull you out of alignment. (1 point)
  2. You show up as your authentic self, rather than performing or pretending just to fit in or get ahead. (1 point)
  3. You take ownership of your life, instead of waiting for someone else to rescue, validate, or fix things for you. (1 point)
  4. You’ve stopped blaming others or complaining, and instead focus your energy on what you can control, like your mindset, your habits, and your daily actions. (1 point)
  5. You’re actively working toward your highest potential, living and moving in a way that reflects your values, vision, and personal power. (1 point)

If you scored 3 or more, you’re likely on a strong path toward deeper self-awareness and intentional growth. If you scored less than 3, don’t worry. This isn’t a test you pass or fail. It’s a checkpoint and tool you can use to help you see more clearly and move with purpose.

Take Action: Building Self-Awareness Takes Practice

So how do you build this kind of self-awareness? How do you get to know yourself so well that clarity, alignment, and growth become your default state?

Here are three simple but transformative habits you can begin today:

  1. Record yourself talking…and play it back. This might feel strange at first, but it’s eye-opening. Listen to how you sound when you explain your work, your goals, or a challenge you’ve faced. Pay attention to your tone, your filler words, and how clearly (or not) you tell your story.
  2. Notice your patterns…especially the ones you fall into without thinking. Do you ramble or over-explain? Do you soften your language when you should be assertive? Are you holding back from saying what you really mean? These small tendencies reveal how you truly show up.
  3. Change your environment…even slightly. Whether it’s working in a new space, engaging in a new community, or just taking a different route through your day, shifting your environment forces you to notice what feels familiar, what throws you off, and how you adapt. That awareness reveals your defaults, and shows you where you have room to grow.

The Real Work Begins With You

At the core of all of this is one truth: nobody can build your life but you. Self-awareness is the foundation that helps you move from thinking to doing, and from dreaming to building.

Whether your goals are personal, professional, creative, or all of the above, cultivating self-awareness will give you the edge. It’s the skill that unlocks every other skill.

If you’re reading this and you’re ready to start that journey, say it out loud: “I’m ready.” Write it in your journal, drop it in the comments, and speak it into your life. And then, take one small step today that your future self will thank you for.

Action Step

Pick one thing you already know you need to do, and take the first 15 minutes to start. Not tomorrow. Not next week. Now. Whether it’s journaling, researching, sending the email, or setting the boundary, do it today. That’s how self-awareness becomes growth.
