Maximize Your Job Search Potential: Creative Tactics That Get Results

In today’s competitive job market, simply submitting online applications might not be enough to land your dream job. With so much noise out there, it’s essential to explore creative tactics that can set you apart from the crowd. Check out a few innovative strategies to consider below.

1:1 Networking vs Mass Networking

Instead of just mass posting and saying that you’re “open to work”, try sending “check-in” notes via LinkedIn’s voice notes feature. Take the time to genuinely connect with people in your network. Ask about their well-being before naturally updating them on your job search journey. This personal touch can leave a lasting impression and keep you top-of-mind when opportunities arise.

Remember: Your network matters and you have to be real with them. In a tough job market, I received a few contracts just by telling my old colleagues and connections in 1:1 coffee chats that I was open to work.

Real-Life Experience

You have to be “bullish” about getting experience. If you’ve tried the standard hack of reaching out to hiring managers, and you’re still not getting anywhere, then it’s time to step away from your computer screen and focus on gaining hands-on experience that expands your network IRL.

Gaining IRL experience could involve:

  • Volunteering at organizations relevant to your career goals. (Here’s more info about how to do that + one of my favorite volunteer portals)
  • Collaborating on projects with peers. (here are some inspo project prompts)
  • Job shadowing professionals in your field. (here’s how to find professionals to job shadow)

Remember: Building real-life connections can open doors quicker and provide invaluable insights (i.e. what you like/don’t like) about your chosen industry. If you don’t know where to start or what types of experiences you need, ask Breakroom Buddha’s AI Career Coach for help!

Document Your Journey

Utilize platforms like LinkedIn’s Newsletter feature to share your job search experiences with your network. Some alternative platforms you could use include: Substack, TikTok, or even Beehiiv.

Whether it’s the lessons learned, challenges faced, or successes achieved, documenting your journey can showcase your resilience and determination to potential employers.

Remember: You’re already unique and have “stand out” talent. You just need to show your skills off a bit. By writing/filming/documenting your journey, it’s an easy-ish way to stand out and demonstrate your commitment to personal and professional growth. Plus, it will also help you keep track of what’s working and what’s not working!

Bonus Tip: Get Clear on Your Career Goals

If you’re uncertain about what you want from your career, it’s challenging for others to understand your aspirations.

Tip Before You Start: Be realistic with yourself. What can you do? Like really do? If you had to could you do this thing in your sleep? And do you have PROOF that you can do that work (i.e. volunteer work, portfolio projects, side hustles, etc.)? I love being delulu and aspirational but this is not the job market to be delulu in. Good luck, you got this! 🙂

How to Use The DIY Job Description Form: Treat each question as if you’re crafting your personalized job description. Consider all the skills, interests, and abilities you’d bring to the position as you respond to each prompt.
