4 Things You Should Never Do on LinkedIn

It seems like virtually everyone is on LinkedIn now. It’s grown so rapidly, that if you’re new, you might not realize that there are certain things you should never do on LinkedIn.

In this article, we’ll dive into those top unspoken LinkedIn rules, as well as tap into how you can stand out on LinkedIn. This article will be especially helpful if you want to build up your personal brand on LinkedIn, post your own content, and build a professional network.

P.s. Make sure your LinkedIn Profile page is completely filled out before engaging on LinkedIn! If people stop by your page, you want them to know as much as possible about you!

LinkedIn Rule #1: Don’t be selfish.

Someone recently said, “everyone’s an influencer.”

Yes that means you too!

So, flex your influencer skills by sharing your knowledge. Everyone has a special skill, talent, hobby, passion, experience, and story that NEEDS to be shared. Figure out what yours is and share it with the digital world. Yes, this means that you have to do some self-discovery work to figure out what your “IT” factor is, and how you should share it, but that’s the fun part!

LinkedIn Rule #2: Don’t be a lurker.

If you’re silently scrolling, stop it!

The easiest way to jump in on the action that’s happening on LinkedIn is to simply have an opinion. Engage with the content on your feed by hitting the reaction button, and dropping a few comments expressing your thoughts on the topics posted. If someone responds to your comment, keep the conversation going by responding! After all, LinkedIn is a social platform.

LinkedIn Rule #3: Don’t be shy.

Connect with people and companies who inspire, engage, and move you.

This is how you find your people and your community. Re-read point #2. Again, LinkedIn is a social platform.

A really cool example of this is the Wonsulting community on LinkedIn. I randomly found them on social media, but since then, I’ve seen them EVERYWHERE. It’s because they’ve amassed a community of followers and supporters that really believe in their mission and engage with their content.

A good amount of professionals have joined the movement and tagged their posts with #wonsulting and shared the tips and tricks they’ve learned from the founders of the movement. See an example below!

LinkedIn Rule #4: Don’t be afraid to stalk.

Find a handful of people who have clout. And not fake clout.

Find the people who have something to say and can move a community of people or who share a wealth of knowledge that will get you to where you want to be faster.

By engaging, you’ll learn from their mistakes, you’ll get to ask them questions directly, and you may even find more people in their network who you can connect with. Remember point #2! Engage with these influencers and their communities often.

Austin Belcak and Jonathan Tesser are both great examples and people you can follow. Both have insightful content for every type of professional, as well as a very active community of followers. Check them out.

Once you start engaging, people will get extra curious! They’ll want to know who they’re talking to, so they’ll take a peek at your LinkedIn profile. Use the guide below to make sure you’re LinkedIn profile is up to date!
